How a report is built
Capture
Audited annual financial statements are captured line by line into a single template, in local currency, then converted to USD at average and year-end rates.
Standardise
Ratios for capital adequacy, asset quality, earnings, funding and liquidity are calculated the same way for every bank, so peers compare across borders.
Analyse
Analysts add the business profile, ownership, market position and sector context, drawing on regulator data and published ratings.
Score
For Comprehensive reports, key protection factors are scored and combined into an overall assessment with a written rationale.
Financial years end in December for most African banks (Ethiopia's banks use June). Audited results appear anywhere from two to eight months after year end, and we update each country as they are published.
